KG Manoj’s Journey Through Design, Illustration and Visual Narrative

For KG Manoj, designing a publication is rarely only about putting words and images together. It is an opportunity to discover the visual idea hidden within a story—a metaphor, a cultural memory, a place, a character or a human experience that can give the publication its own identity.

His work across a range of publications reflects this continuing interest in designing for literature, culture, specialised knowledge and human stories.

Sakhavum Sevakanum — Finding the Metaphor

Written by Kavalam Sasikumar, Sakhavum Sevakanum explores the relationship between two friends and their differing ideological perspectives. Manoj’s illustrations interpret this relationship through the Kalasham (pot), a familiar element in Kerala’s cultural and ritual traditions.

Rather than illustrating the narrative literally, the Kalasham becomes a metaphor—holding different meanings and associations while retaining its essential form. The illustrations therefore become a second layer of storytelling.

Jatayupara Sri Kodandarama Temple — Story in Stone and Performance

The publication on Jatayupara Sri Kodandarama Temple brings together sacred geography, mythology, cultural memory and Kathakali. The story of Jatayu and Rama is connected to the landscape of Jatayupara, while Jatayu Moksham is brought alive through Kerala’s classical performing tradition.

Here, publication design becomes a way of documenting not just a temple, but a living cultural narrative.

Pranathosmyaham Ramam — Beginning a Pilgrimage in Print

Pranathosmyaham Ramam marks the first literary initiation of the “Padam Padam Rama Paadam” 1008-step project. The publication introduces the sacred journey towards Rama Padam while bringing together the story of Jatayu, the temple and its cultural traditions.

Behind Every Smile — Putting People at the Centre

Behind Every Smile takes a completely different path. Created around the Kerala Social Security Mission’s “We Care” initiative, the publication documents the experiences of people who received social support.

Here, the design challenge is not mythology or metaphor, but human experience—allowing individual stories to move beyond statistics and become something personal and memorable.

Construction Philosophy — Giving Industry a New Visual Voice

With Construction Philosophy (CP), Manoj’s publication practice moved into a different territory—industry journalism and specialised professional content.

His association with the CP team involved the rebranding and redesign of the magazine, with the aim of developing a more contemporary and internationally oriented editorial identity. The work explored stronger cover concepts, typography, visual hierarchy, photography and editorial composition to give technical and industry-focused content a clearer and more engaging visual voice.

Unlike the literary and cultural publications, Construction Philosophy required design to communicate expertise, information and professional authority while maintaining the visual character of a contemporary international magazine.

Designing the Space Between Words and Images

Across these publications, the subjects are vastly different: friendship and ideology, mythology and pilgrimage, cultural performance, social care, and professional knowledge. Yet they share one common thread—the search for a visual language that belongs to the story.

For Manoj, this is where publication design becomes meaningful.

Not simply designing a book, but discovering how a story wants to be seen.
